The Mezquita de Córdoba is therefore much more than a mosque or a cathedral. It is a living historical document. One of the world's most unique monuments, where layers upon layers of history can still be experienced under the same roof. Nowhere else in Europe does the story of the meeting between the Islamic and Christian worlds unfold so clearly.

For many visitors, the experience becomes surprisingly emotional. Not necessarily due to religion, but because the building exudes a rare tranquility. The most iconic feature of the Mezquita is the enormous forest of columns with its more than 850 columns and the characteristic red-and-white horseshoe arches, which seem to continue infinitely. The light that filters through the arches creates a truly special atmosphere, making the building just as fascinating today as it was over a thousand years ago.

When Córdoba was recaptured by the Christians in 1236, the mosque was consecrated as a cathedral. Instead of demolishing it, they chose to preserve it, and several hundred years later, a Renaissance cathedral was constructed within the existing building. The result is an architectural masterpiece where Islamic and Christian art converge in a way that is found nowhere else in the world.
