Alhambra – Spaniens smukkeste palads

History

About Alhambra

The history of Alhambra begins as early as the 9th century, when a smaller fortress was built on the Sabika hill overlooking Granada. However, it was not until the 13th century, when the Nasrid dynasty made Granada the capital of the last Muslim kingdom on the Iberian Peninsula, that the area was developed into the lavish palace complex we know today.

Sultan Muhammad I began the construction of Alhambra in 1238, and the subsequent rulers expanded the complex over the next 250 years. Each sultan aimed to create even more beautiful halls, larger courtyards, and more impressive palaces than his predecessor. The result was an architectural masterpiece where Islamic art, geometry, and nature merge into a unique whole.

In 1492, the last Muslim ruler, Boabdil, handed over the keys to Alhambra to the Catholic monarchs Isabella and Ferdinand. Thus, nearly 800 years of Muslim rule in Spain came to an end. Instead of destroying the palace, the new rulers chose to preserve it, and later, Emperor Charles V commissioned his own Renaissance palace in the midst of the complex. Therefore, Alhambra today tells the story of both the Islamic and Christian cultural heritage in Spain.

The highlight

You must not miss this...

The heart of Alhambra is the famous Nasrid palaces, where the sultans resided. Here lies the iconic Lion Courtyard (Patio de los Leones) with the renowned fountain, supported by twelve marble lions. The courtyard is considered one of the highlights of Islamic architecture.

Another iconic site is the Myrtle Courtyard (Patio de los Arrayanes), where a long reflecting pool mirrors the palace's elegant arcades. It is one of the most photographed motifs in all of Spain.

Adjacent to it is the Generalife, the former summer palaces and gardens, where the rulers of Granada sought refuge from the heat during the warm summer months. Here, roses, orange trees, cypress, and lavender bloom around fountains and small streams, while the view over Granada is truly exceptional.

Do not miss the Alcazaba, the oldest part of Alhambra. The massive fortress with its defensive towers offers a fantastic panoramic view of Granada, the Albaicín district, and the Sierra Nevada.

A visit to Alhambra is not just about seeing beautiful buildings. It is about experiencing a civilization that left an indelible mark on Spain's history, art, and architecture. Each courtyard, each colonnade, and each fountain tells a story of a time when Granada was one of Europe's most important cultural centers.
